Gummy Smiles and Short Teeth

Many patients visit us with concerns about “gummy” smile or “short” teeth as seen in this photo. Usually, the teeth are actually the proper length, but they’re covered with too much gum tissue.

To correct this, Dr. Gibson performs a procedure where excess gum tissue is reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth. This can be done to one tooth to even out your gum line or to several teeth to expose a natural, broad smile.

Gum Recession Can Affect the Appearance of Your Smile as Well

The opposite can be true when there is progressive gum recession around the teeth, exposing the roots. Not only can this make your teeth look long and age your smile, but the exposure of the roots can give a yellowish appearance to your teeth near the gums. Good daily oral care and regular professional cleanings can go a long way in preventing gum recession. However, if you’re already affected by gum recession, we can help.

Gum Grafts Can Help Stop and Reverse Gum Recession

One of the ways in which gum recession can be addressed is with a gum graft. Gum grafts are used to cover exposed roots and to create a thicker, stronger gum tissue around your teeth. Reversing gum recession covers the roots of the teeth so that they no longer look excessively long. This procedure can be done on one tooth, multiple teeth, or even the entire gum line. Missing Teeth

Not only can a missing tooth affect your ability to bite and chew food, but it can affect the look of your smile and your face shape. Dental implants are a great tooth replacement option that look and feel like your own teeth. Learn more about dental implants in Calgary.

Crowns and Veneers

If you’re considering crowns or veneers on your front teeth, it’s always a good idea to make sure the gums are symmetrical. If one tooth is too long, a gum graft can even out the gum line making your new crowns or veneers look even better.
